RYC was founded about 1880 on the west bank of the river Clwyd in Rhyl’s west end.

At that time Rhyl was a vibrant holiday resort with extensive ship building facilities both here and up stream at Rhuddlan.  When ships sailed up the river from Rhyl to Rhuddlan the newly built railway was moved out of the way by means of an opening bridge.  Hence railway timetables were scheduled around the times of the tides.

In its early years most members of RYC were keen sailors, exclusively using wind power and joining up with nearby clubs for long distance rallies.  The West Kirby Yacht Club used to sail to the Menai Straits stopping overnight at Rhyl Yacht club for a social.  Nowadays most boats have an engine either as a primary or secondary means of locomotion.

Rhyl Yacht Club holds club cruises several times a year allowing members to sail in company. These cruises vary in distance from local cruises to Rhos on Sea, Conwy etc and longer distance to the Isle of Man. They allow less experienced members to call upon the support of more experienced members as they begin to learn the skills needed to sail safely at sea. Individually members sail further afield visiting Ireland, Scotland, France and even sailing down to the Mediterranean.

The club premises in Rhyl are always busy.  During winter most boats are laid up ashore. In the summer many boats are moored in the area down stream of the Foryd Bridge. All year round members can be found working on their boats or socializing in the comfortable club house.

Recently there has been a very active initiative to reintroduce dinghy sailing to the yacht club.  Last year six Optibat dinghies were purchased and more than 80 two hour taster sailing sessions were run for youngsters, followed by a Royal Yachting Association  Youth Sailing Scheme course.  These sessions were held on the Marine Lake. Activity is being extended this year with the range of dinghies now available including Wayfarers, Toppers, a Miracle and the Optibats.  In addition to continuing the activities with the youngsters, adult taster sailing sessions are being planned this summer, targeted at those over fifty, or about to finish employment.  A dingy sailing regatta to Rhos on Sea is planned for later in the summer which will be our first dinghy sea voyage for many decades.
